The Greenhouse opens its glass doors for the first time as an official UN SDG Pavilion
For a hundred years, plants grew in the germination houses in the Botanical Gardens. Then they were condemned for demolition, saved at the 11th hour, moved and rebuilt. Now they are ready as BaneGaarden's new event venue, Væksthuset. An official UN SDG pavilion inaugurated as part of the UIA World Congress of Architects 2023, it will be BaneGaarden's new green cultural meeting place and venue.
BaneGaarden has opened the (glass) doors to our new event venue, Væksthuset. The first guests to step inside were some of the 10,000 architects, urban planners and construction industry professionals who are currently visiting Copenhagen to attend The UIA World Congress of Architects with the theme 'Sustainable futures - leave no one behind'. The 200 m2 Greenhouse with room for 80 people is one of 15 official SDG pavilions for the event.
Green ideas must germinate
Where plants used to grow, green ideas and activities will now flourish in a setting that unites nature, culture and architecture - during the Year of Architecture and beyond. A new experience place with high ceilings and big ambitions. Carl Johan Paulsen, Director and Partner, says:
"There is a potential and a need for green, recreational spaces for learning and socializing in our city, and Væksthuset is just such a place. With a view of treetops and the sky - and bathed in daylight - we offer a setting for events in the middle of wild nature, but only 15 minutes from City Hall Square. Especially if you come here as a company, it's an inspiring environment with room for big ideas."

Væksthuset is BaneGaarden's new cultural meeting place
The Greenhouse will be the setting for several of BaneGaarden's upcoming cultural events such as organic long table dinners, bingo races and various workshops. Keep an eye on the events page for the next time you can attend an event in the Greenhouse.
If you want to hold your event at Væksthuset or combine it with a larger dinner or party, we offer a number of options. For example, you can book Væksthuset as a meeting room for your company's next day meeting, celebrate a wedding party, or hold receptions of different colors. All meeting and event packages include catering from BaneGaarden's own restaurants, street food stalls and gourmet bakery. All ingredients are organic and the meals are prepared by our skilled chefs.
Building facts about Væksthuset
The greenhouse is built with architects from forma studio and with support from re:arc institute.
The greenhouse was built based on the same principles as when we started the restoration of BaneGaarden's barns in 2019. Instead of simply building new, existing buildings are rebuilt and restored using materials from Genbyg. By rethinking the way we build, CO2 emissions can also be significantly reduced. In concrete terms, this means, among other things:
- The greenhouse is set up on a screw foundation instead of a traditional concrete foundation, which has less impact on the climate and means that the building can be dismantled and in principle moved.
- The original wooden structure and as much of the glass as possible has been preserved.
- The floor is made of recycled bricks from the old Grøndalscenteret.
- The house is insulated with hemp and lime, which promotes both acoustics and indoor climate.
